how is this effect done? do you layer 2 fotos with one color and one b/w? or do you just take all the saturation out of the picture while protecting the color of the object you want but outlining it?

Hi Kamikaze Hummingbird, thanks for visting and commenting the Trainride!!

The two methods you described above would both work in fact, although I didn't use them for this picture - this one came straight from the camera. Turns out the Canon Powershot series (I had an A700) has an option to do a this.

All my other photos with this effect are Photoshop though. To get the most precise results, it would probably be best to copy the object you want to keep in color into a new layer, and then desaturate / b/w the other one.
