LOL Reminds me of a certain flight back from Hamburg! Just discovered your website. Am shamelessly devouring your expertise! Whlst on the subject of Herons can you look at This One and zoom in to find the kingfisher just to the bottom left. I stumbled across the two together and did a John Wayne draw on them a split second before they flew off. Joking apart I have a great deal of admiration for you when I see pictures like this Heron. I can see you were using a long lens but these creatures can be so shy and NEVER pose. I bought a decent camera and 300mm lens only last month and tried getting some of the numerous birds in our garden to pose. Am still trying!

You are one up on me. I have glimpsed kingfishers once or twice but never had chance to get my camera to my eye let alone get a photo.
For wildlife in general it's often best to find a likely spot then wait for them to come within range. Going looking for them rarely works. They spot you long before you get close enough. Their survival depends on them being alert to danger.
Patience and luck. That's the name of the game.
