A view of the second level balcony looking towards the front of the North Centre Bastion's Caponnier.
The top of the ramp leading up from Tunnel 1 is behind the viewer, and the steps to the 3-room gallery above Tunnel 1 are to the left.
A ground-level view was taken from almost directly below the window (embrasure) in the above photo.

Standard Info:
See the Satellite view of the North Center Bastion annotated with tunnel system locations, surface features, drawbridges, etc.
The North Center Bastion is only part of Dover's extensive Napoleonic defenses - click on Western Heights and then check the tag list for all the locations covered (eg Drop Redoubt, Grand Shaft, North Entrance - more will be added as time goes on).
Also see St Martin's Battery
Work began on Dover's Western Heights fortifications in the 1770s and was intensified, first in the early 1800s because of Napoleon I (Napoleon Bonaparte), and again in the mid-Nineteenth Century because of Napoleon III (originally known as Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte).

Thank you for your comments, Tim :)
When I was a kid, the place used to be called, "Dead Man's Island", then people increasingly began calling it, "Smokey", but I've no idea why, either.
Another 'mysterious' area of Dover is Cowgate Cemetery - did you look at the 'empty coffin' pic?
Watch out for the ghosts the next time you go to Smokey!
