01 of March! - ”MARTENITSA” - “Baba Marta”
A very special Bulgarian Feast in Bulgaria!
It is an ancient Traditional Feast in Bulgaria in 1st of March every year people to give each other Martenitsa. The tradition said that the Martenitsa which was given to you by somebody else gives you a lot of health and happiness. So on this day everybody gives to his relatives and friends Martenitsa. The most typical Martenitsa is called "Pijo and Penda".
The classic colors of the Martenitsa are Red and White. Red is the symbol of blood and life and White is the symbol of happiness and purity. Martenitsa is made by the red and white thread but in some places like Rhodope Mountain is used also thread in yellow, blue or black color. In addition people put also almonds, garlic and silver coins.
The Martenitsa is usually made by the old women at home and with a help of the kids. A special Martenitsa is made for newborn babies. People put Martenitsa also in newborn farm animals, grape and fruit trees.
The 1st of March is connected with the coming spring. The nature is awake. It is said that this tradition is very old. In 680 a.c. the sister of Bulgarian Khan Asparuh sent him flowers closed with red and white thread with a wish for a lot of health and happiness.
Remember: You should have your Martenitsa always nearby your heart in the clothes outside. But it is possible to wear Martenitsa also in your hands or neck. You can wear your Martenitsa from the 1st of March till 22th of March or till the first time you see a stork before 22th of March! Then you should leave your Martenitsa in the branch of the flowering tree!
So Let my Martenitsa brings to all of you a lot of Health and Happiness!
Beeeing in internet lots of years now I found that also in Romania people give each other Martenitsa. They are similar to Bulgarian Martenitsa and if I remember right it is called Marteshot.
The photo you see here was made near Briançon, Le Rosier, Provence-Alpes-Côte dʼAzur (France). It was incredible sunny day today, even hot, 18C, but later when the night came temperatures changed till 3C (and maybe more less later). On this photo you see natural Bulgarian Martenitsa I put there!

Howsoever My photos won't win anything because I am not one who is working for this in Panoramio. As you know winners are people who are working hard to cover you up with spams. I DON'T LIKE THIS!
I put my photos for voting just because on this way I could show people some new places to see in the Planet Earth I hope!
You all are very kind and I appreciate it! Many thanks!
