1st of March - A double Feast this year in Bulgaria!

BABA MARTA & ZAGOVEZNI

1.

1st of March - “BABA MARTA” - ”MARTENITSA”!

A very special Bulgarian Feast in Bulgaria!

ЧЕСТИТА БАБА МАРТА на всички мои Български Приятели и потребители на Панорамио! Желая на всички много здраве, щастие, късмет и берекет!

In the photo here you see the most typical Martenitsa called ”Pijo & Penda”. This photo was made last Sunday in the Small lake of Avigliana, Italy, but this Martenitsa is original one and it is My Favourite!

It is an ancient Traditional Feast in Bulgaria in 1st of March every year people to give each other Martenitsa. The tradition said that the Martenitsa which was given to you by somebody else gives you a lot of health and happiness. So on this day everybody gives to his relatives and friends Martenitsa.

The classic colors of the Martenitsa are Red and White. Red is the symbol of blood and life and White is the symbol of happiness and purity. Martenitsa is made by the red and white thread but in some places like Rhodope Mountain it is used also thread in yellow, blue or black colors. In addition people put also almonds, garlic and silver coins.

The Martenitsa is usually Handmade by the old women at home and with a help of the kids. A special Martenitsa is made for newborn babies. People put Martenitsa also in newborn farm animals, grape and fruit trees.

The 1st of March is connected with the coming spring. The nature is awake. It is said that this tradition is very old. In 680 a. c. the sister of Bulgarian Khan Asparuh sent him flowers closed with red and white thread with a wish for a lot of health and happiness.

Remember: You should have your Martenitsa always nearby your heart in the clothes outside. But it is possible to wear Martenitsa also in your hands or neck. You can wear your Martenitsa from the 1st of March till 22th of March or till the first time you see a stork before 22th of March! Then you should leave your Martenitsa in the branch of the flowering tree!

So Let my Martenitsa brings all of you a lot of Health and Happiness!

Being in internet lots of years now I found that also in Romania people give each other Martenitsa. They are similar to Bulgarian Martenitsa and if I remember right it is called Marteshot.

1st of March! - ”ZAGOVEZNI”this year!

BUTURNITSA – Dart –small rocket!

Леки Пости на всички мои Български Приятели и потребители на Панорамио!

Today it is BabaMarta feast but also another one feast in Bulgaria – “Zagovezni!” (it is similar like “Carnival” in catholic countries) – so in this year we have double feasts in 1st of March in Bulgaria!

It is always seven weeks before Easter and one week after Meat Zagovezni, always on Sunday - a celebration which marks the beginning of the long fasting during the year. Official dinner table has emphasized ritual nature.

Traditionally prepared ritual dishes: Banitsa with cheese, bread, rice with milk, eggs, white khalva nuts, fish.

In the evening of celebration in the house of parents are going all the families of the children of this family for preparation of fasting for the next days. Joy and liveliness during dinner increase when it's a time for custom Hamkane.

Hamkane - at the end of hempen thread (sometimes it is Martenitsa) hanging on the ceiling or on a long pole is strong sense peeled boiled egg, cheese or a piece of charcoal khalva. Swinging the thread is in a circle and all around the table (mostly children) trying to catch up suspensions.

On Shrove (somewhere in all Sirna Sunday) people are getting forgiveness. The youngest kissing the hand of oldest, (children of parents of newly stand) expressing the formula of forgiveness: "Forgive me male (mom), Dad...".

"I forgive you, the Lord forgives you all” – it is a statutory response. Without Forgiveness you cannot touch the ritual dishes.

The most distinctive and important tradition of the holiday is the ignition fires (Sirnishki Fires). People are playing “Hora” around the fire and these “hora” are the last of the winter holiday cycle. During the Easter fast roundelay not play except Buenets.

In the area of Nova Zagora people are used to shoot in the area some small things like rockets or so called “BUTURNITSA – Dart” - you see one in this photo here!

Hope you enjoyed to read all this information and saw pictures related to the text to understand more.
