On the opposite side of the river, at the end of an avenue on the top of the bank, and ½ mile from the Penicuik House, stands an obelisk, raised in 1759 by Sir James Clerk to the memory of his own and his father's friend and frequent visitor, Allan Ramsay the famous Scottish poet (1686-1758).
