This photograph was taken from the West Coast Wilderness Railway (or Abt Railway as many Tasmanians still prefer to call it), close to Sailor Jack Creek on a delightfully damp and misty day.
Thanks, Bob. My dad used to drive an Abt locomotive on this line and I travelled it many times sitting behind him in the cabin of the loco. Wouldn't be allowed to do it these days of course. I haven't lived on the west coast of Tasmania for over 50 years but I have to go back every once in a while to get rained on (100 inches annually) and let the leeches have a feed off me just for nostalgia's sake. The day I took this shot was very much a west coast day. Cool, damp, misty - but only five leeches!
It's certainly great fun. The railway line is an old mining railway which has now been turned into a tourist railway. It travels through very thick rainforest for probably 20 kms, much of this along the banks of a river and another 10 kms or so in more open country. The rainforest is home to many species of animals - wallaby (a small kangaroo), wombats, possums, Tasmanian Devils and smaller animals such as bandicoots, pademelons, quolls, bush rats, snakes, lizards etc. Plenty of birds too. No koalas or foxes in Tasmania, although it's now thought some foxes may have recently arrived on the island.
