Back in the olden times when I was a girl and my father took Kodachrome slides, he was always happiest when I had a red shirt or jacket. Not that he took those pictures of me. (That was a separate category.) But he took travel pictures with me enjoying the scenery, and the red was an added touch. So it is here, subtly because it's in the shade. It adds to an already excellent photo in terms of composition and lighting.
I fully understand where your father is coming from. As in this photo it really helps to gives the photo the added touch.
