'He harried to deploy for battle formation near Nineveh where the landscape was proper for maneuvering the great numbers of his forces. After pitching a camp around the township of Arbela, Dareios drilled his forces daily and made them very disciplined by continuing daily practice..... He offered Alexander all the territory west of Euphrates, thirty thousand talents of silver, and one of his daughters as a wife, and by being a son-in-law who would take the place of a son, together to rule the whole kingdon. Alexander called in council all his friends and laying in front of them the proposals, he asked them to speak their minds freely. None of them dared to say anything because of the gravity of the situation, but Parmenion who said first: "If I were Alexander I would accept whatever is offered and agree to a treaty." Alexander cut in and said: "And if I were Parmenion I would receive what was offered.' From Diodorus' of Sicily. Library of History. Book 17:53-54.
