I'm at 5500 feet in the mountains between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, about 8 miles from the 8800-ft summit of Mt. Pinos - a favorite gathering place for serious amateur astronomers on moonless nights after the snow melts back enough for the rangers to open the road. You've probably heard of it. Between May and October, the parking lot at the top in often crowded with astronomers and wonderful gear like yours. The nice thing is, most of them don't mind sharing the view with novices like me.
