Hi! Paul, I took this pictures 1989. I just told Capt. Frank Liparanon to passby Kawit Island for a shot not thinking during that time that it will be a part of Cebu Island now.

Dear Mr. Umabong, it's possible, to give me a photo in a higher resolution of "Kawit Island 1989"? Cause my wife - Filipina - is from Alumnos, Basak, Cebu City. Many times during low tide we walked and swim a little bit from Alumnos to Kawit Island (1000 meter). Never have seen a photo like this before. As you know, now it`s history - cause of the reclamation-area.

hi paul! so this is history making? you know what? before i used to pass by to this island when i was still a kid. my grandfather was a fisherman and every once a week he'd pass by this island. One day he showed me what this kawit islang looked like and there it was, lying like a bird. It was really nice to see. hope we'll live and tell new generation how this beautiful island it was. -

Thank you for the nice comments on Kawit Island photo. There was a time in the 60's and the 70's that all the bad element in Cebu City were placed in this island for safe keeping. And this was done every Sinulog (Mardi Gras) Celebration.

I'm curious as to who owned the island. Does anybody knows who owned this island or at least, who was the registered owner? My lineage came from Kawit and I have not really been there before, I would like to visit one day. This is the place of my origin. Thank you for the picture.

Kawit Island is owned by the government. Because of the South Reclamation Project here in Cebu. Kawit is part of Cebu Island now.

Pinoy_Nick, this really brings back some memories. My wife is from Alumnos Seaside, Cebu City. I was in the USAF and stationed at Mactan AB in 1965-1967. Interesting pic of Kawit Island. During WW2 it was known as Cauit Island and the Japanese had a seaplane base established there. I have not been there but I guess now that its a part of Cebu Island, it can be accessed. I have a photo of the old tower built by the Japanese during WW2. Would be interested to know from those who have been there if any of the base of the tower remains today.

tferedo, I will check the area when i passby. I think cement base is still exist because that red roof building still exist until now.
