Here is the king of Broceliande forest, a large beech surrounded by pine trees, in a remote place of the “high forest”.

The name of Ponthus come from a 5th century knight who came from Galicia to Brittany. Big stones around the tree witness of the presence of a castle, destroyed during 13th century breton succession war.

Voici le roi de la forêt de Brocéliande, un arbre magnifique dans un endroit magique. Il aurait près de 300 ans, entouré de résineux près du point le plus haut du massif. C’est un lieu très reculé, très difficile à trouver et situé dans la partie privée de la forêt (en principe, accès réglementé voir interdit). Pour vous repérer, il est visible sur les photos satellites !!

Le nom viendrait d’un chevalier galicien, débarqué en Bretagne au Vème siècle., selon un roman du XIVème siècle. Le château bâti à cet endroit aurait été détruit par Du Guesclin. De gros blocs de pierres autour du hêtre en témoignent encore.
