Denny's Leven Shipyard at Dumbarton was famous around the world. Of all the Clyde Shipyards Denny produced the highest number of vessels - over 1500.
A full list (and many images of the ships built there) by Denny at Dumbarton can be found at the Clyde built Ship Database - go to the following link and select 'William Denny & Brothers' (leave the other fields blank). William Denny & Brothers specialised in cross channel mailboats and ferries. However they built warships and cargo vessels. Denny was a very innovative company - the built the first passenger steamer to be powered by steam turbines, were early pioneers in helicopters and hovercraft. In conjustion with Edinburgh based builders of steering gear, the Dumbarton firm invented the pioeering Denny-Brown ship stabilisers.
When Denny went into liquidation in 1963 the shock spread through their many customers world wide. The shipyard was used for a short time in the 1960s and 1970s by the firm of Foster Wheeler John Brown Land Boilers. Thereafter it lay unused until some of the site was redeveloped for residential properties. The former fitting out basin was infilled and tace of it has disappeared under the new Dumbarton F C football stadium
