Thank you very much, Andrea, Snemann and Marilyn. I am thrilled with your complements, and I was happy I was able to take a photo where the foreground and background didn't merge into one. The view from up here is wonderful, as the landforms are very unique. From the other side of Crown Butte facing towards the west is the extreme topography of the Rocky Mountain front, but I didn't get any photos I liked from that side. While the landform I was standing on, and the one visible in the distance are referred to colloquially as 'buttes', geologically they are really 'mesas'. Most often such landforms are sedimentary remnants, but here, they are capped with resistant volcanic rock. These areas have been protected for harboring some of the last vestiges of native grassland in the Northern Plains. Cheers, Eve

Thanks, Eve, for the additional information. I became hooked on geology when I visited the Grand Canyon (among other Western sites) when I was sixteen--and that's a long, long time ago! Cheers, Marilyn

Great photo, Eve, and the explanation you provide is crackerjack! You did a great job choosing wonderfully contrasting foreground and background; it creates a superb sense of depth. Gold star :-)

Hello EVE,You have so many visitors that a comment from me probably makes no differance.Stll I like to make you a compliment for your contribution to Panoramio . I live in such a small country that possibly you never heard of it or you know the Dutch because of there liberal attitude to soft drugs and the fact that they live in a country that is for about 45 percent belowe sea level .Anyway my land is flat and tiny and yours is huge and very diverse in scenery. You live in one of the least poppulated regions of the states and it must be A fotogenic paradise. It is for me great joy to look at your stream of images and it's impossible to react on each of your pics but be assured that I will look very often to your fotowork ;for that reason you are of course in my favs.thanks for sharing your views.I nearly forgot: this is again one of your grand images!!!
Greetings from HOLLAND,.,FEIKA
