The Barra Lighthouse is highest of Portugal, the second highest of Europe and third of the world. Constructed between 1885 - 1893, the plant was made by a self-taught man who won eleven engineers who also presented plants and scale models. Its inauguration was made by Bernardino Machado in 1893, the then Minister of Public works, when he visited the region. The main luminous source was incandescence of oil vapor. Only in 1950 the lighting system became electric.

Interesting history, Avelino! The lighthouse in my picture was built in 1907 and was the first concrete structure of the whole coastline. This year it is the 100 year anniversary and I am participating in a photo competition on the lighthouse.

Recuerdos de Bélgica.
