The 16th century Three Tuns was probably the most decrepit and unwelcoming looking pub in Hay when this photo was taken in 2001 . "This is a shop for local people, there's nothing for you here"
Has since been seriously fire damaged and is now beautifully refurbished inside and out.
...maybe, David, but The Three Tuns no longer has Lucy serving the beer and the cider against the backdrop of those sepia pint glasses - untouched for decades! I miss, too, those genuine early 60s Babycham point-of-sale cut-outs on the bar. I don't suppose old Lil gets in there nowadays - not since it was 'done-up' - so stories about the Great Train Robbers (who fled in '63 to the Three Tuns) from her and Lucy will no longer entertain drinkers. I often sat drinking in the slightly sunken bar, amused at the number of touristy-types who'd peer in through the grimy windows to see if there was life within - then walk on! A great little pub which gradually went from being quaint to being a little too 'rustic'. Glad I frequented it before the change...a bit of Hay History that was. I have some nice shots of the bar...perhaps I'll post them here.
I'll take your word for it! As an occasional visitor to Hay I never ventured inside, being struck only by the forbidding And decrepit exterior. It did look like the sort of place where there would be an 'Old George' permanently welded to his seat in the corner, who would give 'furriners' dirty looks if they dared to step inside.
