The Old Hall Gainsborough.

The town of Gainsborough is situated along the side of the River Trent. Once famous for it's Britannia Iron Works and the name Marshall and sons,a manufacturer of steam engines, packing machines, naval guns, midget submarines and tractors that were sent all over the world.

Old Hall Gainsborough was Originally built around 1460. Gainsborough Old Hall is one of the most complete medieval manor houses to survive in the country , despite being partially destroyed during the war of the roses. It has played host to many noteworthy people over the years, not least of which two Royal visitors, King Richard III in 1483 and some sixty years later in 1541 ,to King Henry VIII. In 1603 the early separatists ( now known as the "pilgrim fathers") worshipped there in secret , before they sailed to religious impunity in the New World. Steeped in history Gainsborough's past is recorded in the Doomsday survey of 1086 as a town of 80 people. Later during the middle ages it emerged as a major wool centre and thriving port.Ship building became an important industry in the 19th century with vessels upto 700 tons. In 1841 Gainsborough also became a port of foreign trade with it's own customs facilities, unfortunately by the 1850's trade was in decline due to the railways.
