Great shot. Is the island really as haunted as they say ? And were you spooked to leave quickly ?

It's not so haunted (if I uderstand well what "haunted" means). It was a sanatorium in old days, except for big rats there are no animals... Now it is being restored and it probably will become an hotel. There are many other islands in the Venice lagoon that were used to keep in quarantine sailors or as asylum or for plague people to avoid contagion. Many of them are abandoned and very wild but no animals are on them except rabbits and rats, the island that was an "asylum" is S. Servolo, and now it is a university, I think. There is also S. Lazzaro that is a convent and where there is a mum and a copy of Corano of the same age of Maometto. Many of them were convents and know are completely destroyed or abandoned.

Poveglia is a tiny island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy.

It has an unfortunate history and is considered by some to be a hot spot for ghosts. During Roman times it was used to isolate thousands of plague victims, and during the three occasions when the black death spread through Europe, the island was effectively used as a plague pit — it was considered an efficient way of keeping the infected people separated from the healthy. It is believed that over 160,000 people died on the island throughout its history.

The island was home to a small community until it was abandoned around 1380, during the War of Chioggia between Venice and Genoa.

In 1922, a psychiatric hospital was built on the island. It is rumoured that many of the patients claimed to see the tormented spirits of the plague victims soon after their arrival. The doctor there investigated this phenomenon by conducting crude lobotomies and medical experiments. He supposedly began seeing the ghosts himself and had gone crazy, after his death the remaining patients put his body in the belltower and sealed the exits. After this, the hospital was abandoned and remains so to this day. It is rumored that that if you pass the island at twilight you can hear the screams of agony from the plague victims. the docter was very evil there are stil glass where there are brains and stuff

Now this Island is for sale. Some venetian citizens are disperatly trying to buy it. We have made a society. If we succeed in buyng it the Island will become a citizen park, accessible to everybody without restrictions. Please partecipate or spread the voice. We don't want another big hotel company there. This is the link to get more informations: Thanks
