I've told about the war with Chechen Muslim terrorists (1996-?) in Caucasus Mountains in Russia. Probably you have already heard about act of terrorism at Beslan school in North Ossetia in 2004, where terrorists have ruthlessly killed more than 300 children. If not, look this article in Wikipedia.
Last summer (2008) there was the war in South Ossetia in Georgia. The Georgian armies with support of Americans tried to cut out all population of this small republic. Russian peacemakers, who were in South Ossetia and protected local population, have been brutally killed by the Georgian and American soldiers. Russia had to enter the armies on territory of South Ossetia. The Georgian and American soldiers in fear have run up, but Russia did not begin to enter an army on territory of Georgia. After some months the president of Russia has signed the decree about a recognition of independence of South Ossetia. Now this country recognised only Russia and Nicaragua.

Of course I remember that news. While in Colombia only spent a few minutes a day was very impressive. The Wikipedia article is impressive.
