Thanks alu1510, I checked out your gallery and favourites, you have a wonderful selection of critter photos.

Thanks N1w and Ippa.

Actually Dianne bridwatching has always been my passion but now with a 15X zoom lens I can capture some of what I see. Its fun.

Norrel on April 20, 2009

Nice capture, Cal. I could have guessed the name of this bird :>)

Norrel on April 20, 2009

I learned from the satellite image that you took this picture near the Yellowhead Hwy.

Bits-n-Pieces on April 20, 2009

What a beauty of a bird! I'm so envious. We don't have these around here :<

Very good observation, Norrel! I wondered what Yellowhead referred to in the highway name - Cal - is this the same route that starts in Masset?? Or just the name of a highway system?

someGuyinmasset on April 20, 2009

Nice one Cal.

Depends on which way you're traveling B-n-P.

Jean Gregory Evans on April 20, 2009

We don't have these down here, this is a gorgeous bird. Is the highway named after the bird?

Another star!

Jean

Now I'm all confused about the highway. We call this section the Coquihalla. I always thought of the Yellowhead going from Prince Rupert to Winnipeg. I think you have the right idea Kamaly, its a highway system. I don't know if its named after the bird but that would make sense.

Thanks so much for the star Jean.

Gorgeous bird and perfect shot, Cal! I never knew there was a yellow-headed blackbird.

"The highway is named after a famous French-Indian guide that worked for the Hudson Bay Company. Because of his blond hair, the Indians called him Tete-Jaune, or Yellow-head. In 1827, Tete-Jaune discovered the lowest and easiest pass through the Canadian Rockies, which is now named after him, Yellowhead Pass." I read it on the web so it must be true!

Marbiz on April 21, 2009

Its a great shot of the bird Cal. I've never seen blackbirds with yellow heads. How gorgeous.

Cal Kimola Brown on April 21, 2009

Thanks Nawitka and thanks so much for the explanation of the naming of the highway. Somehow I didn't think it was named for the bird.

Hey Loopslady, thanks for stopping by.

Thanks marbiz, well thats what my bird book tells me its called.

someGuyinmasset on April 22, 2009

Morning Cal, just hanging out here at the Pacific Terminus, Yellowhead Highway.

Norrel on April 22, 2009

Thanks for your explanation, nawitka. We now know that the bird was named after the Highway.

Cal Kimola Brown on April 22, 2009

Well it seems the Yellowhead is everywhere, even in beautiful downtown Masset.

jayzoe on May 4, 2009

Love these guy's, so much better than the boring red winged black birds that are everywhere here. Only see these guy's once in awhile. Wicked shot.

Cal Kimola Brown on May 5, 2009

Thanks Zoe, this is their nesting area so there are literally hundreds at peak season.
