Research Overview: Robsons Yard, West Street, Dover, Kent, UK

My name is John Robert Latter (aka 'jorolat') and this where I live in the Tower Hamlets part of Dover.

This entry consists of a brief description of Robsons Yards Flats, 13 West Street [1], Dover; subsequent 'Comments' will describe aspects of the research into specific areas of Evolution, Psychology, and Social Psychology I have been involved in while living at the above address.

In 'days gone by', Robson's Yard (or Robsons Yard, as it is now more commonly written) belonged to a builder of the same name. The site was then bought by the Samuel Lewis Housing Trust (founded by the financier Samuel Lewis, 1837 – 1901) who built six flats, interlocking lego-fashion, along the western, northern and eastern sides of a rectangle, with the eastern side fronting the street.

The flats were officially opened by Peter Rees [2], Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Dover at the time, on the 24th of September, 1986. In 2001 the Samuel Lewis Housing Trust changed its name to Southern Housing Group to reflect the changing nature and scope of the organization.

To the left of Robsons Yard in the above photograph is The Carriers Arms public house at 12 West Street. This pub was once briefly renamed The Battle of Britain and more information will be appended to a photo of the whole of the building when it's been uploaded.

To the right of Robsons Yard is 14 West Street which used to be the Tower Hamlets Post Office (run by Andrew Hunnisett) and was approved for closure on the 6th of December, 2007.

East Street, West Street, North Road, South Road - [East Street is the] only one of four Tower Hamlets Streets named after compass points, which could be really justified. West Street is almost as far east as East Street. North Road is to the south of the district and South Road runs more or less south-east to north-west. In a Dover Express dated January 20th 1866 it states - The Town Clerk ordered that the two unnamed streets in Tower Hamlets in future be called East Street and West Street.

Peter Wynford Innes Rees, Baron Rees PC, QC (9 December 1926 - 30 November 2008) was a British politician. He was Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Dover and Deal from 1974 to 1983 and MP for Dover from 1970 to 1974 and 1983 to 1987. He was Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 1983 until 1985.

Rees was educated at Stowe and Christ Church, Oxford, where he took a degree in history. After National Service with the Scots Guards from 1945 to 1948, he was called to the bar in 1953 at the Inner Temple, and became a QC in 1969.

The previous comment refers to the fact that I and other tenants of Robsons Yard have been subjected to just about every form of psychological abuse/"anti-social behaviour" you could imagine!
