A wonderful find the almost empty cafeteria. I also like backlight photos. Very well crafted. Congratulations.
In light of recent conversations about histograms, I wonder how the "purists" would deal with a shot like this. If you reduce exposure for the overexposed section, the rest of the image would be too dark and the photo would go to the scrap heap.
While I don't believe rules are made to be broken, I do believe there are very few rules that apply in all circumstances.

Yup. I tend to use use the histogram as an indicator as to what's going on and eyeball what actually gets done. I cant really say that I have any 'rules' in mind when working, It's more a matter of suck it and see, and if it works use it.
This was a massively bright and flarey scene in real life, as the sun was only just hidden by the roof line. If Id taken a few steps forward it would have been in shot. Very difficult to look at even with sunglasses on, though I could see there was potentially an interesting picture there. It did take a lot of work in Photoshop to get it looking right, working from a single jpeg from a bracket of 5. I'm quite pleased with this one in that it does capture the 'flavour' of the scene as I remember it (which is what I was trying for with this image), if not the absolute harsh intensity of it - computer monitors don't go that bright!
