The Wey and Arun Canal Trust is restoring the waterway between the River Wey at Shalford just south of Guildford in Surrey and the river Arun at Pallingham four miles north-west of Pulborough in Sussex.
The trust was founded in 1970 to restore the canal and todate 9 locks, 22 bridges and 2 aquaucts have been restored or rebuilt. Well over half the canal has now been cleared.
The strategic importance of this canal is the fact that it is the only outlet to the English Channel from the whole of the national waterways system. It was orginally built in two sections ~ Pallingham to Newbridge some 4.5 miles ong in 1785 to 1787 and then between 1813 to 1816 the remaining 18.5 miles from Newbridge to Salford.
In these shots you can see the results of the complete rebuilding of a lock and a bridge taken in April 2009
Now I see the wooden coffer dam. The three photos are very clear and very educational for me, at least. I especially appreciate the commentary. Thanks! Theolfa
I was peeping at these yeaterday Nick - nice pics, and lovely to see the craftsmanship still there, not replaced by modern materials eyc - do I assume that your job takes you on the road a lot?
Theolfa ~~~ Great feedback from you again Theolfa ~ it is nice to know that the info is doing its job along with the help of the pictures :)
Graham Hobbs ~~~ At present I am going out every Wednesday doing a delivery route that takes me to Southampton, Portsmouth, Chichester, Billinghurst, Guildford, Farnham the Hogs Back and those sort of places ~ the Countryside is delightful and as I'm in a 7.5 tonne lorry my view of it is superb. ~ This enables me to spot good locations to return to with my Landi and Camera when not working! I'm actually MD of a company but with the current downturn we all muck in and do our bit. Today I started at 0530 and I have now just got back home to Chalfont St P ~~ Tomorrow morning early I return self and lorry to our factory in Dunstable.
Friendly greetings to you both from nick
