Barkol was in 73 AD a Xiung-nu (Hsiung-nu) town when it was attacked by the Western Han Chinese. Some eqate the Xiung-nu with the 'Huns' who appear in Western Europe 250 years later. There is scanty evidence of this theory. The Xiung-nu disappear from history after their defeat at Barkol. The history of the Chinese wars with the Xiung-nu is a confusing story that lasted throughout the two Han Dynasties (200BC -220 AD). It is well told by René Grousset, 'The Empire of the Steppes, a History of Central Asia', Rutgers U Press, New Brunswick, 1970, p.p 33. The bone of contention was, in short, the control between the Chinese and the Xiung-nu of the European kingdoms on the Northern Silk Road, which had become rich from the steadily increasing caravan trade. Eventually, in the 2nd cent AD, the Chinese gained the upper hand and established a number of military outposts (Barkul, Turfan, Yiwu, Loulan, Khotan, and Yarkand). This greatly enhanced the security along the Silk Road and the vulume of the trade (3rd cent AD)
