Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its nameName. It has become an iconic symbol of London. Tower Bridge is one of several London bridges owned and maintained by the City Bridge Trust, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation.

The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways which are designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge to the left and the right. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. Its present colour dates from 1977 when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a chocolate brown colour.

Tower Bridge is sometimes mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is actually the next bridge upstream.[2] A popular urban legend is that in 1968, Robert McCulloch, the purchaser of the old London Bridge that was later shipped to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, believed that he was in fact buying Tower Bridge. This was denied by McCulloch himself and has been debunked by Ivan Luckin, the seller of the bridge.

This link will take you somewhere that will tell you more about the Tower Bridge

The "Girl with a Dolphin" is by David Wynne and was made in 1973

Hello Mr Weall,

My mind boggles, you nearly had me there Nick. I thought why the hell Nick uploaded same picture again? Then checked the dates they were taken between few days apart. you took both shots in same position & angle. Interesting history of the Tower Bridge, some how I under stood that they use to lock valuables there, such as Queens Crown..

Regards Manoo

Magic10 (^_^) ~~ Just in case you missed the main point dear Manoo the bridge is open in this shot ~ the two central spans of the bridge are lifted high to let a tall ship through :) The queen's jewels are locked away in the Tower of London by the way, but on view to the public during opening hours.

MioaraP ~~ Thank you :))

© mimipet.com, ~ I have taken shots of the Girl with a Dolphin from all angles 360 degrees around the statue Mimi but I'm not putting them all up on this site, maybe I'll put them on my other site tomorrow.

Mira Paskota Thanks dearest Mira be kind enough to read my reply to Magic above though just to be sure :)

Friendly greetings to you all from nick

What is this Nick? Are we playing a game, find the difference between these two pics. They are so similar at a first glance, until you pointed out the open/shut bridge. As always I never looked at the title which was the high light pointing at open bridge. Any way thank you for pointing out to us on right direction as so far no one has noticed that. And silly me, confusing myself with Tower Bridge & Tower of London. Many thanks again..Manoo
