This oval cross-section kiln was built at the turn of last Century to a German pattern. It was heated by burning coal gas, manufactured on-site in gas retorts. Although that seems perverse, given that lime can be burnt by direct contact with coal in an ordinary clamp kiln or draw kiln (and there are three of these at Makareao in good condition, the lime gets contaminated with sulphur compounds and ash. In a Schmatola Kiln the gas burns and apart from small amounts of sulphur compounds it adds nothing the the reaction except the heat needed to drive off the Carbon Dioxide. It was successfuly operated to make purer burnt lime for commercial uses like in the refining of sugar, for many decades. Partly demolished sadly, what remains is an Historic Places Category 1 heritage place.
