Hello Axota, they were going to sail to a remote atoll 180 miles away on that thing....with no gps liferaft or anything remotely like that...and oh, they were all totally drunk when leaving.

I smiled when I read your comment. The reality is a far cry from the image that I had conjured up in my head.

I suppose it is possible that the Polynesian sailors of the past, who were known to have travelled hundreds of miles, with only the sun and stars to guide them, left their home base in a similar state of drunkenness. One would hardly attempt this voyage if one was sober.
