In the 1930's, when Carlo Levi's sister, a physician, stopped here on her way to see her brother who was in exile in Aliano, she was, as Levi writes in Christ Stopped at Eboli, immediately struck by the ragged children begging not for alms, but for quinine. Declared 'a national disgrace' in the 1960's, the are is now a World Heritage Site, and many of the 'Sassi' cave dwellings are bijou bars and restaurants. Notable - if anything can be more notable than the site itself - is the 'rock church' of Santa Maria di Idris.
