Maijishan Grottoes 麦积山石窟

Maijishan ("Wheatstack Mountain"), located on the northern side of the Qinling Mountain Range and at a height of 1742m above sea level, gets it's name from its giant, haystack-like shape. The mountain's fame arises not just from its appearance, but from the many Buddhist caves that are gouged into its southwestern face. This is the fourth largest area of concentrated Buddhist grottoes in China, after Dunhuang, Datong and Luoyang. The area around and on the mountain is one of the most beautiful sights in Gansu for both stunning natural, and impressive man-made, scenery. The mountain, studded with caves and strapped by many winding walkways and spiral stairs, rises majestically from the surrounding heavily wooded slopes, so any visitor here with a bit of time on their hands could easily spend a few days hiking and admiring.

Hallo Mr Zhang,
I wonder if there are stairs or if there is a path leading onto the top of Maiji Shan. Do you know about this? Thanks Juergen

Hi, Juergen. peoples said can onto the top of Maiji Shan from the back of the mountain in my hometown, but I'm sure there is not any real way, you know i means stairs or path. Maiji Shan is a cliff, it's very dangerous, i think there has some ranger to make sure peoples couldn't onto the top of Maiji Shan. But if you really realy really want to, I think there is another way, you can looking for a villager from the village in the Maiji Shan, of course, you must say chinese, and pay some money. if you luck, i would like to congratulate you ;-)

Ni hao! Xiexie ni. It seems to be as I supposed: it is forbidden to take another way up than the official one. I visited the grottoes same years ago and I intend to come back to this place one day. If you live nearby, I would like to meet you, Harry. If I will really try to get to the top then I don't know yet. Anyhow, the area is worth to be visited from time to time (Maiji Shan is my wife's favourite mountain in Asia!). Thanks a lot, we should keep in touch.
