In 1882, at the same time that the University was building its state-of-the-art observatory, a director's house was built alongside, designed by Charlottesville architect George W. Spooner. It was later named for Harold Lee Alden, alumnus, astronomy professor, and third director of the observatory. Alden House, along with McCormick Observatory was granted landmark status in the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2004.
