Old and new. I prefer the old! Can't beat a decently designed classical building for visual interest

Thnk you for the comment and the visit. I also prefer the old but I must admit some modern architects make appealing works. Life is full of contrasts.

Cheers

Yes...the contrasts are interesting, but I know which building I would rather live in!

As somebody interested in architecture, this might amuse you, Draken.

Most of the buildings in this pano (the ones nearest to camera up to but not including the White Cross pub) were built in the 1980's by an English architect called Quinlan Terry, who (very unusually!) works in the classical tradition.

Thank you David.

It is a beautiful photo an it is good to know that there still are architects capable of designing and building in the classical tradition, respecting the urban environment. It rests to find out if it is more expensive but it is clear that certain crafts (masons, carpenters, blacksmiths, etc.) won't die if architects continue doing it. Great Britain is a very special place where tradition is respected without denying modernity altogether. If only the weather were a bit better...

"If only the weather were a bit better..." Well.. the weather has changed. Since the beginning of the 90's the summers have been warmer and sunnier than when I was a kid. We had some very hot summers in the late 90's in London.

Last two years in Spain, where I now live, have been cooler and wetter... c'est la vie. Where I am now on the Mediterranean coast we now have full reservoirs - very unusual!

"It rests to find out if it is more expensive" Yes they are, but the construction methods and materials used in classical buildings have stood the test of time. Those buildings in Richmond will still be standing in hundreds of years if they are properly maintained. Many modern buildings built in London in the 1960's have already been pulled down because of bad design and inappropriate use of materials - cheaper to build again rather than try to repair.
