Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos were feeding on Casuarina seed. Because their juvenile offspring were constantly squawking (what a rukus) I was drawn off the path to watch. By finding a reasonable hide, I was able to capture them in flight as occasional bushwalkers or returning rock fishermen noisily walked the track. This bushland is located on a lighthouse reserve on Burrewarra Point, south of Batemans Bay, New South Wales.
Thank you for appreciating this photo - it did take a bit of stalking and sitting still in the grass in the vicinity of the trees in which they were feeding...and then it is a bit of persistence until you find that you are pointing the camera in the right direction! But it paid off.
It was a challenge to get in close and then to follow a bird with the lens when it took to flight. Looking up though the branches there weren't many windows, but this bird obliged and took off and flew just above. I got one shot at him with the camera!
Hi Ian, nice shot. YTB Cockatoos are one of my favourites. So big and majestic, with such laboured flight an beautiful calls. I agree the babies are very noisy and demanding. They are a joy to find.
