This image of a Hindu temple precinct's wall and gateway frames the Islamic mosque near Bedugul in the volcanic west of Bali. In the multi-religious society of Bali, Indonesia the Hindu population is the dominant majority, and Islam and Christianity are represented by significant minorities. While the terror blasts in Kuta (Sari Club and Paddy's Bar) followed two years later by the bombing of Jimbaran Beach and Raja Restuarant had a devastating impact on the tourism economy of Bali, it also threatened to tear apart Balinese society with fear, anger and suspicion as well as with consequences of increased unemployment because of the decreased tourism. However, there has been excellent leadership that has brought together a summit of religious leaders from across the spectrum who have elected to work in a gentle peacebuilding way.
Ian, I'm glad you've posted this fine and thought-provoking photo and have included what you have written.
I'll use this space to point you to a photo I have posted on Photochain rather than on my own space. (Anyone may contribute there, and each photo is supposed to link in some way to the previous one. The links are often tenuous and whimsical.) When I mapped it, I was surprised to discover that there isn't another picture of this site on all of Panoramio. Marilyn
