I was near Denpasar when I saw a news flash telling of terror bombings outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. Beneath the tv monitor two men were playing tabbletennis as if the world was a peaceful place, and above them were alarming images of terror and grief. Next morning my friend and I had a scheduled appointment at the Australian Consulate to see if we could obtain Australian support for peacebuilding training in Bali. On arrival at the entrance, security had required the closing of the Consulate, and large wreaths of sympathy had been placed there by Balinese organisations. Since then we have been able to conduct significant training in peacebuilding and convened inter-religious leadership summits in Bali and a national consultation on Indonesian unity.
