Steven Shepheard rips up the soil as he accelerates his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 across the Derrier Creek flats before the ascent up Derrier Hill. Competing in the Australian Rally Championship event held on the Sunshine Coast in May 2009, he and his co-driver John McCarthy earnt themselves 30 points towards the national championships by finishing 8th in stage 1 and 9th in stage 2, position 8 overall.
The event is conducted in the Imbil State Forests. The course includes stages in the Millions Logging Area, in the Kandanga area from Kandanga Creek through Melawondi and over steep sections into Mitchell Creek and Butlers Corner, then another stage that includes Mt Borumba, Mt Travers, Derrier Hill and along Weston Creek and a stage in the forestry at Brooloo and Auracaria. Imbil Showgrounds becomes the operational base for the weekend event.
So fast, the photographers are still looking in their view finders! The next rally car will follow in about 2 minutes!
Yes I thought that the photographers had noticed something more attractive!! But speed has caught them out ~ great narrative Ian and a great image ~ Ciao nick
Did you wear mask? Too dusty . :)
No mask was necessary for it went past fast too! Glad the males in the network are enjoying photos of fast cars.
Some gal was being brave or exhibiting a need for attention, perhaps?? You would have enjoyed all the photo-shooting opportunities of that day, from spiderwebs and foggy sunrises to historic trains, helicopters and 78 fast cars ripping up a diverse and challenging course. The home village was pretty well alive that weekend.
They are standing very close. No safety fence. They really trust the drivers in car races. :)
This was a straight section with some tight S bends before it so the drivers are accelerating and are in control then, so it was a section where spectators were allowed to be close. Safety is given high priority by the event organizers. It was great for photographers, Jeff.
Superb photo. Well composed.
Greetings from Malaysia ... AZRA™
There was plenty of that around that day, Ntinos. Thanks for sharing.
You may well have opportunity to see some of these cars and drivers in Malaysia, for this was Round 2 of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship and one of the rounds is held in Malaysia later this year.
I appreciate your assessment of this image, for it was my first visit to such an event with the camera, so I felt a bit of a novice among the press photographers with their monster lenses. But I didn't see any images much better than mine, so I'll probably be enticed to try more of this speed and action event.
Warm greetings from Australia.
Nice photo! I like racing.
Greetings from Ukraine!
Greetings Alex, from Brisbane. I am pleased that this moment appeals to you!! The drivers are most skilled!
