No, I haven't dared venturing into the HDR field yet. It's just high contrast with some shadow lightening, and then repeating the process.

I have tried something similar (but not as good as this) myself.
I do enjoy tweeking the contrasts to this level. The image almost shrieks out, with the stress of all that stark mono!!
