I remember this when I was in Florence, Italians have a thing for scooters.

Ryan Calhoun on July 18, 2007

Do they ever... On any street, if there were this many scooters parked, there were twice that number buzzing by on the road. They swarm around the buses like little flies. Greetings!

Why so many scooters? The streets of Florence are very narrow, moreover there is a large area inside the city centre where the private traffic is not permitted. If people live outside the city centre, they can’t reach their working places by car if these are located inside the city centre. That’s why there are so many scooters parked in the old streets of Florence.

Hello Ugo. I found it fascinating to see so many modern motor vehicles using roadways designed for horses and carriages a thousand years ago. It seems that any space wide enough for a bus to fit is where the buses go (sometimes pedestrians have to duck under the mirrors), any place wide enough for a car is where cars go, and any place wide enough for a motorcycle or scooter is where the scooters go. Everything else is a sidewalk. The streets of Florence are a nightmare for foreigners to navigate, but it's truly a marvel how well the modern traffic of the city is able to use them.
