Movie location from "Planes Trains & Automobiles. The El Rancho Motel, is located in unincorporated Gurnee, IL. In the movie, John Candy & Steve Martin had rented a car and were driving from St. Louis to Chicago. The car caught fire and Candy & Martin had to trade for a motel room because they didn't have any money. The office can be seen, in the movie, when they are trying to get the car out of a snow drift.
