The Monument to Ostap Bender in Elista, Kalmykia, June 2009

Ostap Bender proclaiming himself the "great combinator" is a con man and antihero who appeared in the novels "The Twelve Chairs"(1928) and "The Little Golden Calf" (1931) written by Soviet authors Ilf and Petrov. These books were an extended satire on certain elements of Soviet life. The name "Ostap Bender" has become an archetypal name for a con man in the Russian language.
