Larry, I'm left speechless!
I had driven to this location in the dark in the fog. I could hardly see the edge of the road, but after the tense trip I found a place to spend the night. I woke up many times looking for stars as a sign that the clouds were settling. I was greatly relieved to see the view in the morning twilight. I took many photos including this one of the sunrise.
Best regards, Larry
Larry, do you know how difficult it is to hike up to the top of Elk Rock? I saw one photo that showed blown down logs all over the slopes, and that would not make for good cross-country hiking!
There is a road to the top (it starts just east of the Bear Creek Bridge on The Spirit Lake Highway), but the Weyerhaeuser gate was locked the last time I was down there. You can call (800) 458-0274 to get information for where and when their gates are open. I have not hiked to Elk Rock from the public view below it when the gate is locked, but I have been thinking about it.
