In year 1820 a Scottish immigrant James Finlayson founded his cotton textile industry to Tampere; this was the beginning of large scale industrial activity in Finland. The location was excellent, because of lot of water power available in the rapids of Tampere river, just around the corner. The company was acquired 1836 by investors Rauch and Nottbeck. The activities developed very rapidly, and until 1920 Finlayson & Compagnie used to be the biggest industrial complex in the whole Nordic countries (Scandinavia).

This elegant head office building was built 1895. I always enjoy visiting such old industrial areas, where the robust machinery and stylish architecture are combined. At their best those areas look like the world of their own. And that surely is the case in Tampere. BR, Timo

In my familie there was also a great Textiles company..ago ca 1840 - 1945 in Germany and later on in the suisse.But today, that is not more. They producted cloth for dressings and made also stockings ,ago. In Austria, there are many fabricsstations today in VORARLBERG (Austria).
