That's really sad. Car boots are so hard to find, too. Can you give us a hint at what's going on here?

Twigland was a garden centre that closed down.

Mama Ts used the space as a cafe and art gallery, plus held a Car Boot Sale in the grounds of the old centre. I believe the building had been sold and so no more sales.

No more garden centre, no more car boot sales, Scally.

Problem is I've no clue what a car boot is or why one would want one.

If this were the US, a car boot is a device clamped to a car's tyre such that it can no longer move. This type of boot is applied to cars parked illegally.

Of course it somewhat defeats the point since the car positioned in a place not desired and therefore booted can no longer be removed.

I'm sure Mama T is not selling these.

I took it to be the trunk, more of the British use. As in fill the boot?

Funny how you Americans don't understand the British :>)

These trunks are made for walking...

Tony Reid, on July 14, said:

Boot = trunk

A car boot sale is when you drive up, and everything you want to sell is in the trunk of your car. The buyers turn up and walk down the row of cars (or small vans) buying their wares.

NZ is full of British sayings.

Plus the British could say they would be putting on a pair of trunks to go swimming in!

We call them togs, or you might call them Speedos.

=)

Christopher B. Rose, on July 17, said:

Ahhh, it's all coming clear now.

In the US, our version of the boot sale is the yard sale or garage sale. We carry our unwanted items out into the yard or set them around the yard so that folks can peruse and buy.

I the northeast US, the yard sale is called a tag sale, presumably because price tags are affixed to each item.

Given the US penchant for accumulating stuff, a car boot would never suffice.

If you had a VW Beetle or other rear engined car, would it be a bonnet sale (if I've got my car terminology correct)?

What an education this photo has provided. Lingusts take note: if you want to teach folks something, take a picture of it!

Tony Reid, on July 18, said:

Christopher - We have garage sales here to. They are held at private residences. A car boot sale means anyone can drive up, pay the fee and start selling. The type of vehicle is normally irrelevant - you could turn up towing a small trailer

People also can drive up in small vans, and tend to sell a small range of products, like handicrafts at one stall, t-shirts at another, or artwork at a third stall, and so on.
