View from Tianeshan (Swan Mtn), one of the conical hills formed by recent karst erosion of carbonate strata of Paleozoic age (251-542 million year old). Starting 40 m.y. ago, collision of the Indian plate with Asia, has thickened the tectonic plate underlying SE Asia, uplifting the Himalaya Range and surrounding terrain. Deep weathering and monsoonal rains have developed the world's most extensive example of karst topography underlying hundreds of thousands of hectares of land as exemplified here in south China.
