Hey Rich.

You have a great collection of photos representing the west. Photos of lenticular clouds always interest me and are very striking. These clouds form around mountain ranges and their smooth shape is due to sub-surface air turbulance--don't fly around these!

Keep up the good work!

Greetings Perkins4, Thanks for visiting the lenticular cloud above Longs Peak and your wonderful and insightful comments. You sound like a pilot who has learned some cloud lessons along the way. Being just East of the mountains we get some great wave form clouds when the weather is changing. Glad you like.

Cheers,

Rich

Fantastic Photo

Greetings Ueda, Thanks for visiting and commenting. The clouds form very regularly over Longs Peak and remind me of space ships. Trail Ridge Road is still closed. They will begin plowing the snow to try and have it open by May 31. Glad you like the cloud photo.

Cheers,

Rich

Richard, beatiful altocumulus lenticularis. I've never seen them that big in Italy. Have a look to this picture from 1993. It is similar to your but for the cloud!. Ciao. Andrea

Greetings Andrea and Pom, Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. I apologize for being so slow to respond. Longs Peak is high enough to affect the high winds and make its own clouds when the conditions are right. The clouds can be very beautiful. Thanks again for visiting.

Cheers,

Rich

greetings Rich, how high is that ? it's always a pleasure to visit your beautiful collection. cheers, Pom'

Richard Ryer, on August 28, 2008, said:

Greetings Pom, The mountain below the cloud is at 14,000 feet elevation. I would think the cloud is forming at an elevation of 16,000 to 18,000 feet. I'm not an expert on that stuff, but it is a neat cloud ;-)).

Rich

Greetings Mario and Rafael and others. Thanks for visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. Longs peak stands over 14,000 feet tall and it is able to make its own weather as the jet stream moves over. You can see the cloud building up on the west side of longs Peak here. It is a beautiful drive along Trail Ridge Road, where this shot was taken. I am glad you all enjoyed.

Cheers,

Rich
