So, who were they then, what craft did they fly?

Looks like a Lancaster, Stirling, Wellington or Halifax crew, WW2, judging by your location map, one of the Bomber Command stations of West Riding ,Yorkshire.

That's just educated guesstimatation, I have no facts to go on and would welcome comment on the history of these brave lads and their exploits, purely out of interest

I was lost Mike (but now I'm found) and came across these wonderful statues quite by accident.

Mmmm, lost, isn't it great being that way?

A lucky happenstance, perhaps you were meant to see the statue?

This monument, in memory of the 851 men who lost their lives flying with 158 Squadron, was dedicated in a moving ceremony on 16 May, 2009. The onument was designed by Peter Naylor. Lissett airield is now turned over to farmland but also has twelve wind farm turbines, manufactured by Novera Energy. Each turbine is named after an aircraft that flew with the squadron. My own father flew a Halifax MkII with 158 when he was shot down over Holland in 1942. Apart from the mid-upper gunner, all his crew survived and Jack Patterson, his navigator, is still alive and living just north of Toronto in Meaford, Ontario.

Thank you Jean. I was moved and quite humbled by this bloomin' great bit piece of steel standing on the edge of the field. It was most impressive and I was amazed (and pleased) I stumbled across it.

This is a pretty cool sculpture. I can imagine them walking toward me in an animated feature.

Hey n1w long time no see, thanks for coming by. This is really cool ain't it? Such a spooky place as these are all life sized and exactly as you say, walking towards you. I felt very very lucky to have found them, quite by accident.

All the best from N Carolina and congrats on your recent honorable mention!
