I grew up on Harehope farm nearby and the local farmer and few others believe it was used as huge fermenting bin. there was once a large wooden bung for the hole at the bottom. If anyone has any other thoughts do spill. We use it as place for hide and seek in the hills.

Apparently The Leper Knights: the order of St.Lazarus owned a Hospital at Harehope(to the north of the farm)in 13th & 14th Century. It is believed to be a Cistern to supply water to the Hospital. I discovered this whilst researching Knox family tree, Thomas Knox born at Harup / Harehope Northumberland 1790 married Ann Marshall of Egligham - must be the same place.
