John Goodall, on July 17, said:
With such a diverse geology, geomorphology and natural history on the doorstep of his family home in Shrewsbury (20km to the north of here), and the benefit of a privileged youthful environment steeped in The Enlightenment, Charles Darwin was well placed to overcome the religious explanation of natural phenomena and develop the scientific understanding of the evolution of species through natural selection. The revolutionary significance of Darwin's work was recognised at the time by Karl Marx, a commentary on which you can read here.
