Mr. JH wrote: I saw your picture of Dead Mans Track at google earth. I trayed the track 6 years ago upwards without training. You can imagine that it stayed a try.
In January i go back to NZ and this time i give it a try downwards, starting from Glenorchy. One day up slowly, stay in a hut and one day the Track upwards.
Can you give me some good advices for that track? what is importend to take with me? how much water is necessary? what clothing is needed? Is it better not to wlak alone? And if you have any further recomendations, I´ll be very happy if you could share them. This time i wont go back...
I think is better to start in Murray Gunn's Camp, Hollyford Valley, because if you started in Glenorchy you will probably reach top of the Deadmen track in the evening. And going down the track I think it's a suicide-:) So when you begin Hollyford for example at 8 o'clock you can reach the top,( which is actually a middle of Routebourn track) at 1 PM. And you will have enaugh time to walk to Glenorchy or oposite side to the Lake MacKenzie Hut. In the middle of Deadmen track there is a creek so you don't have to carry a lot of water. A bottle will be enough. Take a good shoes. Do not go alone. (I will go again-:) The most critical point on the track is to find orange track marks. If lost one go back and search again. The forest is very dense and some marks are situated on the trunk in some 2 or 3m heigh. Here is a video of "the most complicated part" and more images here on my website. Good luck!!
Thanks for the quick answer! You are right, its a czech name. i grew up very close to the border to CZ near Bautzen. The name is from my grandfather. As i know it has something to do with pegions? But i speak very very bad czech! anyway...
very good video! Are you there again in January? Or do you know where to ask best, to find someone to join me? As i remeber, i have to register anyway. maybe they can tell me even now where to find people in advance.
Last time i tryed it from guns camp. but i was not in training to do it the way up. and i think my condition will not change until january. so i´m pretty shure to take the easy way up, stay one night and walk down to guns camp.
So Thanks again, and maybe i will ask something again during my planing...
