Even though the top light was decommissioned in 1935 keepers and their families lived in houses to the eastern side of the old light and maintained the lower light until the 1950's. They also operated the fog signal which was located on the spur between the two lights. This signal was originally a concrete pit into which explosive charges were thrown at regular intervals. This system was replaced by a horn system located in a shed next to the pit. This was in turn replaced by the horn attached to the lower light which is used today. There is a grave on the pathway that runs as northern access to the top light. It is that of a female child. The accuracy of the inscription on this grave is suspect. My family has photo's of the grave taken in the lat 1940's and others taken in the 70's which show differing details.
