What the heck is the crater-like thing @250m to the NE of this photograph?

The building to the North is the airport's main transmitter site. The thing that looks like a crater to the West of the building is actually the scars left on the surface when radial wires were burried around the central tower to provide a ground plane gor this antenna. This is the antenna for low-frequency beacon transmitter. Since the ground is permanently frozen to about 500 meters (except for a shallow "active layer" that thaws each Summer), the low-frquency antenna needed these burried radial wires to act as an artificial ground plane for the antenna. The radial radiation pattern of the antenna depends on an effective ground plane around the base of the tower. The tower itself is the antenna.
